Who can cancel an employment visa in the UAE?

The sponsoring employer. An employment visa is tied to the company's trade licence and immigration file, so the employer initiates and completes the cancellation. Employees cannot cancel their own visa.

How long does UAE employment visa cancellation take?

In clean cases, usually around 5 to 14 working days end to end: about one to three days for the MOHRE work permit cancellation, then one to five days for the residency cancellation. Disputes, absconding reports and free zone routes can take longer. Timelines are indicative.

What is the grace period after employment visa cancellation in the UAE?

For a standard employment visa it is commonly 30 days, counted from the official cancellation date rather than the last working day. It can be longer for some categories. Confirm the current grace period with ICP or GDRFA.

Does the employee have to be paid before the visa is cancelled?

Yes. The final settlement, including any unpaid salary, unused leave and end-of-service gratuity, should be cleared before or at the point of cancellation. Withholding it as leverage is a MOHRE violation.

Can a visa be cancelled if the employee has already left the UAE?

Yes. The employer can process the cancellation remotely through the online platforms using the outside-country cancellation type. No grace period applies because the employee is already abroad.
